What is a good way to improve my sudoku-solving skills?
Q. All my friends are fantastic at sudoku and they LOVE it, but i don't, mainly because well, I can't solve those things. I just want to know for those sudoku solvers out there how do you solve them, is it natural ability, patience, or secret formula that I don't know about...? Thanks.

Q. How does a computer know how to generate an "easy", "medium", or "hard" sudoku? The number of filled-in squares does not describe the level of difficulty.

How does one go about solving a Sudoku cube?
Q. I can't seem to get it. And I can't find anything to help me get it. It's like a rubiks cube but it has the sudoku numbers instead.

A. WARNING this guide only works if your cube has ALL centers as 5's. Sorry for lengthy guide if this is not your case, I have warned you. Hmm, if you know the process of solving a regular cube using the layer-by-layer method. I used to own a sudoku cube, and it really wasn't sudoku where you had to avoid every line, just get 1 of each number on each side, (which I thought sorta ruined the point) but it had a 5 on each center so it would have been impossible... Now, for the first side, remember the even numbers, 2-4-8-6, find those edge pieces (have 2 numbers on them) and position them on the top side so that they run counter clock wise. Make sure you have those pieces that also have another 2 on them. Now, fill in your corner piece, so… [cont.]

How many possible ways are there to fill a Sudoku-2 puzzle?
Q. A Sudoku-2 puzzle is similar to the usual Sudoku puzzle, except for the fact that it includes 16 squares on a 2*2 board, rather than the 9*9 one, and it's played in the same way (of course you can only use numbers ranging from 1 to 4). I have estimated the possible results of a solved Sudoku-2 into 4*3*2*3*2*2*2 = 4!*3!*2!*2 = 576 but I have followed a heuristic method and I have not been able to find a way to prove it mathmatically. Is the result correct? And if it is, is there a way to prove it? Note: I have noticed that some of you have answered that there is only one way to fill a Sudoku-2 puzzle. This is true if you see it as a game, but my point is to find out how many possible outcomes are there if you fill an EMPTY Sudoku-2 (which… [cont.]

Asked by Shaun Super - Thu Nov 29 17:29:21 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. That's a tough one, and I don't have an answer. Suppose you started filling in the grid by starting in the upper left hand corner, proceeding across the first row, then going left to right for the second row, then the third row, and so on. There would be 9! possibilities for the first row. There would be only one possibility for the whole last row. There would be at most 2 possibilities each for each entry in the second to last row. There would be at most 6 possibilities each for ANY entry after the first row (think about it). There would be at most 3 possibilities each for any entry in the 3rd or 6th rows. There would be only one possibility each for the entries in the rightmost column, at most 2 possibilities each for the entries in… [cont.]

What is the least number of numbers needed to be given in order to determine a sudoku puzzle?
Q. I mean What is the least number of numbers that is needed to be given in a sudoku puzzle in order to determine exactly one solution. =p Explain your answer please lol.
Asked by s0nic213 - Thu Apr 5 16:32:28 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Going for "least needed", 17 is the least that has the potential to define a unique 9x9 fill. Going for "most needed", it should be possible to have a 2x2 that can flip either way, so that 77 squares could be filled and still have a duplicate solve, so 78 would be the magic number to force a unique solution. I'm not sure given your question which of these answers you are looking for.

Does anyone know of a good 16 x 16 sudoku making program?
Q. I'd appreciate some on topic answers this time? It's also called hex sudoku. But they're generally called super challengers in the puzzle books and they also have 32 circles going through both center diagonals that cannot contain the same number in either diagonal. I would appreciate it if the program mentioned contains said making capabilities (I just can't get enough of super challenger sudoku!). If you don't know of any programs, at least list a site that has pre made 16 x 16 sudoku puzzles like in the puzzle magazines. I'd really appreciate a decent answer this time, and I'm sure I'm not the only one that likes them!

How do you get the most out of solving Sudoku puzzles?
Q. I'd like to improve logical thinking skills and I have a book of Sudoku puzzles. I know that there are books out there that describe techniques and hints. But are you really learning much if you just learn a set technique from a book? Or would it be more beneficial to kind of...make a "logical break-through" as you practice?
Asked by vkyn89 - Mon Jul 6 20:24:59 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Not sure what I think about this. It's certainly true at the low to middle end of the puzzle spectrum that you can work out your own insights into things that are true for every puzzle. The reason I'm not completely convinced is that there are some seriously complex techniques at the top end that might be needed to solve a particular puzzle. I just don't know if they are accessible enough to just "spot" them as you work through. I'm half way through documenting all the sudoku techniques I can find on my web site: with a primary focus on making it possible for humans to solve these things without needing a machine based solver alongside. You can always hop over there when you need to start looking at intermediate and expert techniques.… [cont.]

A. Gordonian Polygons are an extension of Gordonian Rectangles which are also known as unique rectangles and explained here: Gordonian polygons use the same idea as the rectangle but with more than 4 sides. There is an explanation in Peter Gordon's book: "Mensa Guide to Solving Sudoku" but without a diagram it is pretty impossible to repeat.

What is the minimum quanity of numbers a sudoku puzzle must have at start and yet still only have one solution
Q. If you attempted to solve a sudoku puzzle that only had one blank square then it would be the easiest sudoku possible. On the other hand, a sudoku puzzle with 80 blank squares is almost equally as easy because there are thousands of possible solutions. There must, therefore be an optimum quantity of "starter numbers" that constitute the hardest possible sudoku puzzle by having only one possible solution and yet having the minimum of clues. Additionally i would love to see the maths behind the answer.
