Sudoku (数独, sūdoku, listen (help·info)) (English pronunciation: /suːˈdoʊkuː/ soo-DOH-koo) is a logic-based, combinatorial number-placement puzzle. The objective is to fill a 9×9 grid with digits so that each column, each row, and each of the nine 3×3 sub-grids that compose the grid (also called "boxes", "blocks", "regions", or "sub-squares") contains all of the digits from 1 to 9. The puzzle setter provides a partially completed grid, which typically has a unique solution. Completed puzzles are always a type of Latin square with an additional constraint on the contents of individual regions. For example, the same single integer may not appear twice
The puzzle was popularized in 1986 by the Japanese puzzle company Nikoli, under the name Sudoku, meaning single number. It became an international hit in 2005. From Wikipedia under the

Answered by brioma33 - Sat Aug 8 11:46:41 2009 What is the minimum quanity of numbers a sudoku puzzle must have at start and yet still only have one solution Q. If you attempted to solve a sudoku puzzle that only had one blank square then it would be the easiest sudoku possible. On the other hand, a sudoku puzzle with 80 blank squares is almost equally as easy because there are thousands of possible solutions. There must, therefore be an optimum quantity of "starter numbers" that constitute the hardest possible sudoku puzzle by having only one possible solution and yet having the minimum of clues. Additionally i would love to see the maths behind the answer.
