Anthropology (pronounced /ænθrɵˈpɒlədʒi/, from the Greek ἄνθρωπος, anthrōpos, "human", and -λογία, -logia, "discourse", first use in English: 1593) is the holistic, global, comparative study of human beings. It is a comprehensive study of human beings and our interactions with each other and the environment. Anthropology has its intellectual origins in both the natural sciences, and the humanities. Its basic questions concern, "What defines Homo sapiens?" "Who are the ancestors of modern Homo sapiens?" "What are our physical traits?" "How do we behave?" "Why are there variations and differences among different groups of humans?" "How has the evolutionary past of Homo sapiens influenced its social organization and culture?" and so forth. While specific modern anthropologists have a tendency to specialize in technical subfields, their data and ideas are routinely synthesized into larger works about the scope and progress of our species. The term "anthropology" refers in common parlance most often to Cultural Anthropology, the study of the culture, beliefs, and practices of living people. In American universities, however, the department of Anthropology often includes three or four subfields, including cultural anthropology, archaeology, biological anthropology and linguistic anthropology. However, in universities in the United Kingdom, and much of Europe, these fields are frequently housed in separate departments. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What would an anthropology major with a focus in biological/physical anthropology be able to do? Q. I'm probably only getting a BA, but I've been working part time as a field and lab assistant trainee in the anthropology department. What opportunities could I have once I leave college? I have a major interest in primatology--though I'm also interested in Egyptology and Aztec culture/mythology. Asked by Lucy in the Sky - Tue Apr 7 15:42:25 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. I'm a Mesoamerican anthropologist and archaeologist, but throughout my schooling I have taken many classes geared towards medical and forensic anthro. Anthro is one of those things that you don't get very far without a PhD in it with tons of field experience (which is required to get a Phd). I'm applying to medical and law schools as we speak, and from what I've gotten from many of the schools I've applied to, they absolutely love anthro majors because they are able to handle tons of info. Teaching has so many perks, so that is what I would do if I were not going into medical school. You can work in museums with a 4 year anthro degree but I would highly recommend going further with it. Labs are also a good idea, but from all of the… [cont.] Answered by horselover2015 - Tue Apr 7 23:53:12 2009 Where can I find a list of Anthropology jobs to apply for online? Q. My wife is a graduate of Wayne State University in Detroit, Mi with a degree in Anthropology. We are currently looking for jobs that are in her field but we don't know where to start. A job in Michigan would be nice, maybe in a museum, but if not than any and all options are welcome for us to look through. Thanks. The usual sites (monster, hotjobs) don't usually list much, so I've been looking at non-profit job search sites also (like idealist.org). However, if she's looking for a curator position or something similar, she will have to earn at least a Master's degree. Most of the "real" jobs in this field require at the very least a Master's, most wanting a PhD. Usajobs.gov might help, also. This list government positions, where some anth jobs can be found. Hopefully this wasn't too disappointing. Anthropology is not a field that's very job friendly to BA recipients...Which is why I'll be headed back to school very soon! :) PS. Q. I am currently a student at my local community college, I'm majoring in Social Services. My question is when i transfer to a 4 year University should I stick with Social Services or take Anthropology? I don't want to be a social worker, but I do want a job that involves working with people or even research. What would be the better field to take to not only fulfill my passion(which I'm interested in both) but also earn pretty decent money? Asked by careerbound - Tue Aug 11 13:50:05 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. I think it's a dead heat tie. It's not what you study but how you leverage what you study. Having either of those degrees doesn't signal anything to a prospective employer. She needs to see you in person so you can demonstrate marketable job and people skills. That's what will carry you and your income potential farther.
