Alan Wilson Watts (January 6, 1915 – November 16, 1973) was a British philosopher, writer, and speaker, best known as an interpreter and popularizer of Eastern philosophy for a Western audience.

He wrote more than 25 books and numerous articles on subjects such as personal identity, the true nature of reality, higher consciousness, meaning of life, concepts and images of God and the non-material pursuit of happiness. In his books he relates his experience to scientific knowledge and to the teachings of Eastern and Western religion, spirituality and philosophy.

The single best truth, I've received from Professor Watts: "All belief systems are traps!!!"; which isn't to be taken as, necesarrily, an endorsement for atheism, but that beliefs are to be viewed as roadmaps, and to remember that the roadmap is not the territory. I believe, what Professor Watts, was 'driving' at was that all belief-systems after a time; suck you in and ask for a committment; the committment isn't always bad, and some truths can be learned in the process; just be willing to shed that skin of… [cont.]

I think there are four or five serious philosophical questions: The first one is: Who started it? The second is: Are we going to make it? The third is: Where are we going to put it? • There is obviously a place in life for a religious attitude for awe and astonishment at existence. That is also a basis for respect for existence. We don’t have much of it in this culture, even though we call it materialistic. In this culture we call materialistic, today we are of course bent on the total destruction of material and its conversion into junk and poisonous gases. This is of course not a materialistic culture because it has no respect for material. And respect is in turn based on wonder.
